THE AGING SERVICES NETWORK

It is through the Older American's Act that funding is filtered to Older Adults. The funding network flows from: Federal Administration on Aging to the State Department of Aging to the Area Agencies on Aging to the Local Service Providers (county and city) Every State operates in the same manner. What differs are the services offered from State to State, County to County and City to City. The California Department of Aging (CDA) administers programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long-term care facilities throughout the State. The Department administers funds allocated under the federal Older Americans Act , the Older Californians Act, and the Medi-Cal program. The Department contracts with the network of Area Agencies on Aging, who directly manage a wide array of federal and state-funded services. CDA also contracts directly with agencies that operate the Multipurpose Senior Services Program through the Medi-Cal home and community-based waiver for the elderly, and certifies Adult Day Health Care centers for the Medi-Cal program. Each county and different towns has different programs so it is important to check with your county or city to find out what services are offered. To find out your county agency you can start at http://www.aging.ca.gov/ProgramsProviders

  1. A friend asked me the other day about modifications needed to keep her mom at home. I suggested that she contact her mom's local county to find out if they have any free home modifications programs available. In some counties and cities there programs available to place grab bars and other modifications in place for older adults in the community.
